The National Election Committee (NEC) has posted this year's voter list at over 20,000 polling stations across the country so that citizens on the voter list can find their names and verify their eligibility to cast their ballots there as the national election will be held in July.
NEC spokesman Hang Puthea said the number of polling stations was 23,789 across the country, an increase of about 29, due to the increase in the number of registered voters by more than 600,000 people.
He said according to the law, each polling station can accommodate a maximum of 750 people. Therefore, as the number of people on the voter list increased, the number of polling stations has increased.
“NEC has updated the annual voter list, checked the list, and registered voters to know the exact number on the voter list before distributing it to each polling station. NEC releases the list in advance to make it easier for people to have enough time and ability to find their polling station. Close to election day, NEC will also release the list via our app, so people can check it via their smartphone,” Puthea said.
The Neutral and Impartial Committee for Free and Fair Elections in Cambodia (NICFEC) Executive Director Sam Kuntheamy said that the voter list posting is to give people enough time to find their proper place for voting, adding that because the NEC voter list size increased, the number of people on the voter list may change depending on the station.
“This campaign is convenient for people who are busy, giving them enough opportunities to find a polling station and mark it,” he said.
