The country is set to launch the "Cambodia e-Arrival" mobile app on September 1, replacing the traditional paper-based immigration form. The app will also allow tourists to apply for a visa upon arrival, streamlining the entry process.
The app was piloted from January 1 to June 30 at Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH), Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (SAI) and Sihanoukville International Airport (KOS).
It allows users to complete immigration forms, health declarations and customs reports electronically, according to the General Department of Immigration (GDI), the institution behind the app's development.
The app supports eight languages: Khmer, English, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean and French. Once users complete the necessary information, they receive a QR code, which they can scan upon arrival at the airport or checkpoint, enabling faster check-in.
Travellers are advised to complete the form seven days before departure, though it can also be done immediately before boarding if necessary.
The app also provides information about tourist attractions and links to websites for purchasing tickets to visit Angkor Archaeological Park.
GDI spokesperson Kem Sarin stated that relevant institutions have been informed about the transition from paper forms to the mobile app.
"Before boarding the plane, passengers will be instructed by the airline or onboard staff to fill in the form via the mobile app. They will also receive additional instructions and can complete the form if they have internet access. We have held workshops to explain this transition to embassies, civil aviation and airlines," he said.
He noted that while the electronic immigration form filed via the app is not a visa, it facilitates the process on arrival.
"Foreigners can apply for a visa on arrival using the app because we no longer have officials standing by to process visas at each checkpoint,” Sarin explained.
“Foreigners can access the app anywhere [and] can make payment in advance via Visa card or other available services and track the status of their visa approval before boarding," he added.
