The newly renovated Siem Reap Provincial Referral Hospital has reached 80 per cent completion and is poised to become a regional state-of-the-art medical facility by the end of September, according to health minister Mam Bun Heng.

On a June 18 site visit, the minister highlighted the progress of the structure, aided by Japanese assistance. The projected September completion remains on track, offering a beacon of modern medicine to northwestern Cambodia.

The expanded facility will cater to a growing demand, servicing local residents as well as national and international visitors.

Funded by Japan, the hospital will be furnished with contemporary medical equipment, heralding an era of “superior” healthcare services.

“The government’s objective is to augment the facility in response to the community’s needs, enhancing the regional health services and ushering in an era of modernised healthcare. The Siem Reap Provincial Referral Hospital is set to become a regional model of a contemporary hospital,” explained Bun Heng.

In collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the new facility stands as a testament to the goodwill extended by the Japanese government and people towards their Cambodian counterparts.

With a budget of approximately $19 million, the project includes a state-of-the-art building equipped with modern equipment and facilities for medical training.

The four-storey structure is situated on a 7,380sqm plot, with the building itself spanning 8,380sqm. Once completed, it will feature 200 beds, with groundbreaking having commenced in December 2021. The facility will offer a range of services, including consultations, outpatient treatments, emergency services and surgeries.

Cambodian and Japanese officials expressed hopes that this project will enhance the effectiveness, quality, safety, and professional ethics of healthcare not just for the inhabitants of Siem Reap province, but also for those from the surrounding provinces. Moreover, it is expected to reduce the number of patient referrals to hospitals in Phnom Penh.
