As the general election approaches, Phnom Penh municipal governor Khuong Sreng has requested that the Phnom Penh Municipal Police prepare lists of people whose National ID Cards have expired. They should send the lists to district authorities so they can advise the individuals in question to apply for certified letters that will allow them to vote.

The Phnom Penh municipal administration said that the request was made as Sreng chaired a June 21 meeting to summarise the reissuance of ID cards in the capital.

He urged the authorities in the 14 districts of the capital to advise communes to issue letters that would allow the people to vote, even if their ID cards were unable to be issued in time.

He also instructed them to send letters to the parents of 15-year-old children to apply for the cards for their children as soon as possible, rather than waiting until the cards were needed and then having to rush the process.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Police reported that from 2012 to 2023, they issued more than 1.6 million ID cards to Phnom Penh residents.

It added that according to their forecasts, 132,103 Phnom Penh ID cards were due to expire in 2024, 349,218 in 2025, 276,762 in 2026 and 27, 436 in 2027.
