Prime Minister Hun Sen marked the May 15 International Day of Families with a letter highlighting the family’s contribution to peace, security and economic growth.
“They are vital for sharing experience and knowledge, as well as promoting cultural and socio- economic development.
The day was observed this year with the theme “Families are a driving force in achieving sustainable development goals”.
“I want to express my admiration and gratitude to all of the grandparents and parents who have made so many sacrifices to raise their children to become good students and good citizens,” said the letter.
Hun Sen appealed to every family and community to continue to embrace the spirit of solidarity, morality and good manners. He also urged them to place a high value on education and the sharing of knowledge.
“The Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation must continue to push for the implementation of the National Social Protection Policy Framework 2016-2025 through the strengthening and expansion of social services for the poor and vulnerable. The ministry needs to improve people’s standards of living,” he said.
He called for the Kingdom’s development partners, both local and international, to continue supporting family development, both in terms of financial and human resources, to ensure that Cambodian families remain strong.
Social affairs minister Vong Soth said the day was an opportunity to underscore the importance of family values.
“Families are crucial to ensuring that people learn how to behave with morality and respect. Strong families will ensure that children grow into the kind of individuals that will maintain the peace and economic growth needed to achieve the Kingdom’s sustainable development goals,” he added.
The government has observed the International Day of Families since 2005, as a way of raising awareness of the important roles that families play in the development of not just their own members but society as a whole.
