Outgoing Prime Minister Hun Sen recently presented medals to more than 100 journalists from both public and private media outlets who have covered him at various events over the years. They were honoured with the awards during a dinner gathering at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh on August 14.

Sam Vanna of SEATV was among the jubilant recipients. “I’m thrilled that the Prime Minister has recognised my decade-long coverage of his activities,” Vanna said.

“I’ve not only reported on him but also learnt about leadership, public speaking, and efficient problem-solving from him.”

Vanna further noted the importance of Hun Sen’s respect for journalists.

“He [Hun Sen] emphasises the importance of press cards at some events, which might seem strict. But such regulations are to ensure the safety of the nation’s top leader. Every journalist must have a press card to cover such events,” he said.

Meas Sophorn, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Information, highlighted the significance of the awards.

“This presentation was both an encouragement and a thank you. Our journalists, even in challenging situations in the capital and provinces, have diligently documented government activities,” Sophorn said.

Sophorn emphasised the journalists’ privilege to quote the prime minister.

“They can capture his political messages and his solutions to the public’s challenges,” he said.

“This programme was a gesture from the head of government to highlight his appreciation for journalists. It’s a token of gratitude for their relentless effort in broadcasting the prime minister’s actions to the nation”.
