The first Covid-19 treatment facility in Preah Sihanouk province, along with a laboratory and oxygen generator, was officially inaugurated on September 20. The facilities and equipment cost more than $2 million and are located at the provincial referral hospital.
Provincial governor Kuoch Chamroeun said at the ceremony that the commissioning of the facilities was a great achievement.
He said the single-storey treatment building – a concrete 90m by 30m structure – cost $1,742,830 to build. The smaller laboratory cost $270,000.
He added that these facilities are a gift from Prime Minister Hun Sen and his wife Bun Rany, and that the oxygen machine is a humanitarian gift from China.
Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam Orn commended the provincial administration and all relevant authorities for their active participation in the development of the province, especially for their excellent results in suppressing Covid-19.
“This inauguration reflects the constant growth of the health sector, and will complement existing health services in both the public and private sectors. It will address the plight of the local population and help promote the health sector,” she said.
This new building, with its modern equipment, has made a significant contribution to the provision of care and treatment, especially for women and children, she added.

She advised all medical staff to adhere to professional ethics and to show compassion to patients who come to receive and use the services at the hospital.
“Please, I encourage all medical staff to use gentle gestures, and be polite to patients. In addition, I ask that all hospitals maintain hygiene and cleanliness without dust and germs. They should regularly clean and disinfect medical equipment and the wards regularly,” she said.
Separately, a large Covid-19 treatment centre in Phnom Penh is now 60 or 70 per cent complete and should be in operation by April or May next year, according to York Sambath, secretary of state at the Ministry of Health. The facility will have more than 9,000 beds.
In Preah Vihear province, the health department has also opened a new oxygen generating facility. The generator was built at a cost of more than $300,000, thank to a grant from the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and will serve the interests of about 300,000 people.
