The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and partner organisations are conducting a refresher course on the use of health education textbooks in educational institutions in Kampot province.

The training aims to give the province’s teachers the skills they need to deliver high quality lessons to students.

The workshop is being held at Hun Sen Chhouk High School in Kampot province’s Chhouk district from May 17-21. The training aims to improve the qualifications of grade 8 and 11 teachers by teaching demonstration classes and preparing lesson plans for health classes, according to the education ministry.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Chhay Kim Sotheavy, director of the Department of School Health and attended by Sek Sisokhom, program director of the Reproductive Health Association of Cambodia (RHAC) alongside 128 educators from the provincial education departmant, 45 of them women.

Kim Sotheavy thanked the leaders of the school health departments, the provincial education department, the assembled principals and teachers, as well as RHAC for their attendance at the workshop.

“Understanding more about our own health will help us live longer and achieve our educational goals,” he said.

Sisokhom said the course would give teachers and students in the target schools the knowledge, skills and abilities to contribute in the human resources development of the Kingdom.

The education ministry includes the subject “Health Education” in the core curriculum to provide personal health care information to educators and students through the practice of hygiene and the maintenance of a clean environment to reduce communicable diseases and promote healthy living.

The subject has six components: primary health, mental health, reproductive and sexual health, health and the environment, health and faith, and health and the economy.
