Sar Kheng, former interior minister and current lawmaker for Battambang province, reiterated calls for a concerted effort in upholding peace, political stability, territorial integrity, national sovereignty and safeguarding the monarchy.
He noted the importance of promoting multi-party liberal democracy, civil liberties and reinforcing the rule of law, aligning with the Constitution.
Sar Kheng made the call during the inauguration of a new building at Preah Monivong High School in Battambang town’s Svay Por commune on December 24.
“The peace we’ve maintained and the numerous accomplishments we’ve achieved are not mere happenstance. They result from thoughtful, long-term decisions rooted in our nation’s destiny. It’s all built on robust dialogue, consensus, solidarity and unity. Preserving this hard-earned peace is a collective effort,” he said in a social media post.
He also urged an adherence to the “safe village-commune” policy, encouraging people to actively engage in preventing and suppressing crimes. This includes addressing issues like drug trafficking, theft, robbery, illegal gambling, domestic violence and gang-related activities.
He said that the successes of the past have inspired the seventh-mandate government led by Prime Minister Hun Manet to initiate Phase I of the Pentagonal Strategy. The goal is to enhance economic growth, generate employment, ensure fairness, improve efficiency and sustain momentum. The aim is to lay the groundwork for realising the principles of nation-building in line with Cambodia’s 2050 vision.
Seun Sam, an international relations researcher at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said it is typical for the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) to highlight its accomplishments and positive aspects under its leadership. The party consistently aims to commemorate its achievements, with a strong focus on maintaining stability and peace in Cambodia.
Sam also noted that even though Sar Kheng was not the party’s president, his role as a former interior minister and vice-president of the CPP holds significance.
“Urging everyone to come together in fortifying peace, political stability and championing democracy is crucial. It’s a message the leadership should convey, encouraging positive dialogue to the people,” he said, adding that it is vital for the local authorities to effectively reinforce this policy.
