Soma Group, in partnership with Traing district authorities and the backing of the Ministry of Environment, marked Green Day 2023 with the announcement of a waste management pilot project in Prey Sandek village of Takeo province’s Prey Sloek commune on September 16.

The event, held under the theme “Solid waste management and reducing the use of plastics”, featured presentations from the district administration, ministry experts, and Soma representatives.

According to a statement from the company, this year’s focus addresses a “global concern for the increasing trash and climate change resulting from growing populations and human demand”.

Cham Krasna, CEO of Soma Group and head of the initiative, outlined the project’s long and medium-term plans.

“We will support the project through education and material resources, while also seeking partnerships with philanthropists,” she stated.

Chhoeng Touch, head of the group’s outreach and public relations, told The Post that the initiative aligns with the company’s broader focus on education, hygiene and environmental sustainability.

“We chose this village due to its growing population and increasing rubbish problem. We seek active participation from residents, authorities and stakeholders in refuse management,” he said.

The pilot’s first phase will last four months, during which 90 colour-coded bins will be provided to approximately 300 of the village’s 400 families.

Tith Doeun, a local resident, welcomed the initiative.

“With the provision of bins and garbage trucks, we can actively participate in keeping our streets clean. It contributes to both sanitation and future waste management plans,” he added.
