Two people lost their lives in a traffic accident on the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway this morning, January 3.

The 4am incident involved a Lexus RX300 and a Hyundai cargo truck, with both vehicles reportedly travelling from Preah Sihanouk province to Phnom Penh.

The Kampong Speu Provincial Police reported that the accident took place near kilometre marker K39+200, in Kampong Speu province.

According to data from security cameras provided by the expressway operator, the Lexus, carrying two Chinese nationals, rear-ended the truck.  

The collision resulted in the deaths of the Lexus driver, 40-year-old Li Hov, and a Chinese passenger, Yin Chaoyang, who both died on the spot.

Another Chinese passenger in the Lexus sustained serious injuries. Meanwhile, the driver of the truck fled the scene.

Authorities are continuing their investigation and have impounded both vehicles at the Trapeang Kong commune police administration.
