Police in Preah Sihanouk province arrested two Military Police officers in the early morning of May 1 for their involvement in a shooting that resulted in the death of a man near the Two-Lion roundabout in Sihanoukville’s Commune 4.

Provincial police chief Chuon Narin told The Post that his officers had arrested the two officers just hours after the incident.

“A Cambodian man was shot and killed ... The incident was caused by a drunken argument,” he said.

Nob Panha, provincial deputy police chief in charge of crime, identified the deceased as Chan Borann, 19, an electrical mechanic.

He said the two suspects were officers from the provincial Military Police. The police handed them over to their own entity after the arrest.

A provincial police officer told The Post on the condition of anonymity that at around 1am on May 1, two groups of people were drinking in the commune.

The two officers, named Ratha and Cheko, and another group of three were all drinking in the same shop near the roundabout. Both sides were drunk, and a dispute took place when one side accused the other of staring at them.

Cheko drew his handgun and shot Borann through the head, killing him instantly.

Local police called an ambulance to take the body to provincial referral hospital, which later handed it over to Borann’s family for transport to their home in neighbouring Kampot province.
