In what is being described as exciting news for the Kingdom’s TikTok creators, high-quality, engaging content that adheres to the platform’s guidelines can now be monetised in Cambodia.
Chea Vandeth, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, shared several insights into the popular Chinese social media network’s revenue generation policies, during a March 19 online safety workshop, which featured the participation of a TikTok company representative.
The workshop, organised as a joint project between the ministry and the giant Chinese company, aimed to share information about income opportunities for content creators, best practices for online safety, community guidelines and the effective use of the TikTok social network.
Among the attendees were content creators, journalists and representatives from several government institutions.
In the past, content creators in Cambodia were unable to earn money from the platform because the company only permitted monetisation in a handful of markets.
However, TikTok has recently expanded its money-making programme, called "Subscription", to Southeast Asia, including Cambodia.
The introduction was reportedly driven by the rising number of users and the company’s recognition of the potential for online commerce.
The company guidelines shared the criteria needed to meet monetisation conditions. Users must be registered in Cambodia as an individual, not a company or government body, and must be at least 18 years old.
Additionally, they must have a minimum of 10,000 followers and have received at least 100,000 views in the past 30 days.
TikTok’s “Community Guidelines” also apply.
Cambodia has over 12 million active social media users, accounting for about 68 per cent of the total population of more than 17 million.
The most popular social network is Facebook, with over 13 million accounts, equivalent to 77% of the population.
Meanwhile, Messenger has over 12 million users, and Telegram usage stands at around 10 million. These figures include multiple or inactive accounts.
TikTok is also highly popular among Cambodians, with approximately 10 million users, according to Tep Asnarith, spokesperson for the Ministry of Information.
He reminded all social media users, especially content creators and influencers, to produce responsible, fact-based content which uses credible sources.
He urged them to be mindful of contributing to maintaining social order and stability, as well as safeguarding the safety and well-being of the public.
“Content creators must carry out their activities responsibly. They must behave respectfully and comply with ethical standards,” he said.
“This means that their content is transparent, balanced and trustworthy. It should be beneficial to wider society and preserve social order,” he added.
