The turtle conservation team at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Cambodia and the Kratie Fisheries Administration joined local authorities and organized four outreach campaigns in four villages located along the Mekong river in Sambour district of Kratie province.

The campaign aimed to raise awareness in those communities and engage them in the conservation of fisheries resources, especially protecting the Cantor’s giant softshell turtles present in the Mekong River in Kratie and Stung Treng provinces, WCS Cambodia said on social media on October 7.

The campaigns, which included welcoming remarks and a short video on turtle conservation, songs and question and answer sessions, attracted nearly 200 people including monks, students and villagers.

The key messages were to request that the public stop hunting and trading turtles, stop collecting the Cantor’s turtle’s eggs for food or for sale and to stop all illegal fishing activities.

The campaign also called on the public to join in the protection and conservation of the Cantor’s turtles and report illegal fishing and trafficking of turtles.
