The Cambodian national dragon boat team has made history by claiming gold at the 9th International Dragon Boat Regatta Races in Sarawak, Malaysia.
Although the sport’s overseeing body – the Cambodian Canoeing and Rowing Federation (CCRW) – achieved great success as the Kingdom hosted the 32nd SEA Games in May, claiming two gold, two silver and four bronze medals, the federation said this was the first overseas victory for the dragon boat exponents.
Meas Toeur, CCRW secretary-general, said the victory came in the men’s 12 paddler 300m event, during the October 26 to 30 event.
“Our team was led to Malaysia by delegation head Meas Sarin, with the blessing of federation head Sar Kheng,” she said.
She explained that the team returned to the Kingdom on the night of October 30.
“Sar Kheng had already been informed of the gold medal winning victory. He praised the team, who had demonstrated the value of dedication and hard work. This was the first time a Cambodian dragon boat team has competed at the annual Malaysian event,” she added.
This year’s event saw teams from 20 countries competing across several events. Besides regional sides, teams from as far as Spain, Russia, the UK and Qatar took part in the regatta.
The Kingdom found itself up against 18 of the 20 in its chosen class. The 12 paddler category was separated into both men’s and women’s teams, as well as a mixed class. A 22 paddle class was also on offer.
Toeur explained that the Kingdom had only entered one class. Due to a lack of competitive athletes, the federation had chosen to focus on one event. Its focus paid off, with the team serving notice that the Kingdom’s paddlers will be ones to watch in future events.
