Sound-level and atmosphere testing devices have been presented to the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training to enhance the enforcement of labour laws, particularly in improving occupational safety and health (OSH) conditions for workers.
An August 27 ministry statement explained that the equipment was provided by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) through the GIZ FABRIC Cambodia project on Tuesday, August 26.
It will be used by labour inspectors during workplace inspections, to monitor compliance with OSH standards.
Ministry secretary of state Som Chamnan, accepted the devices from Anwer Hasso, director of the GIZ FABRIC Cambodia project, along with the project’s coordination team.
The 45 pieces of equipment include sound level meters and calibrators, personal noise dosimeters and calibrators, lux meters for measuring light levels, WBGT heat index meters, gas detectors and personal air sampling pumps for detecting hazardous substances in the air.
“These devices are essential for strengthening the enforcement of labour laws and regulations, especially in ensuring compliance with OSH standards for workers,” the ministry noted.
Chamnan praised the GIZ FABRIC Cambodia project for its close cooperation with the ministry, which he said has led to significant progress and achievements.
These achievements have contributed to strengthening Cambodia’s labour inspection, making it more capable, transparent, effective and trusted by all stakeholders, he added.
This handover come as more than 900,000 Cambodian migrant workers have returned home from Thailand, following the recent border conflict.
After the handover ceremony, the GIZ FABRIC Cambodia delegation visited the ministry’s call Centre, which operates the 1297 hotline service to assist Cambodians — particularly returning migrant workers — to find employment opportunities.
